Learning Mishnayot according to the name of the deceased is intended for those interested in basic study. Mishnayot are studied by chapter with each chapter beginning with the corresponding letter of the deceased name.  This is the familiar study that takes place at an “Azkarah” (memorial) or for “Ilui Neshama (soul elevation).
Chapters of Tehillim (Psalms) can also be recited corresponding to the name of the deceased.

Study time is about one hour.

This track includes refreshments and blessings for the elevation of the soul of the deceased.

Study of the 6 orders of the Mishnah in depth.
An in-depth study of the entire 6 orders of the Mishnah (63 tractates in total) and not merely reading or reciting without understanding.

This study track is the best for the elevation of the soul of the deceased, both in terms of the scope of study and quality of study for your loved one.

In this track, emphasis is placed on understanding the content of the Mishnah and at least one Mishnah is studied with the commentaries of Bartenura or Kehati. The other Mishnayot are similarly learned in-depth. (Should you desire to study every Mishnah in-depth with both commentaries, which demands more time, please contact us via the form or phone number at the bottom of the page).

Since the scope of the Mishnayot is vast, the learning is divided between dozens of students, never less that 10 (Minyan), who will divide the tractates between them and strive to complete them by the predetermined deadline.

The study track usually takes up to two months. If the memorial date is approaching and there is a need to accelerate the process, it is possible to set the date earlier and we will ensure to divide the tractates among a larger body of yeshiva students (up to 400!) in accordance with the need. As such, you can rest assured that with G-d’s help we will reach the deadline.

This is the greatest investment you can make for the elevation of your loved one’s Neshama (soul).

Cursory study of the 6 orders of the Mishnah.

This track is similar to track 2 in that the study covers all 6 orders of the Mishnah. However, in this track the study is cursory and not as in-depth (Girsa).

Occasionally, the need for speed or budget limitations and the like do not allow for an in-depth and protracted study.

This track is preferred over the basic track that covers only the chapters corresponding to the deceased’s name. There is great merit and spiritual benfits to having the whole of the Mishnayot recited as opposed to only the chapters associated with the person’s name which is a more basic and short study option.

Since the scope of study is vast, the tractates are divided among dozens of students, no less than 10 (minyan), who divide the tractates among themselves and strive to complete the study before the predetermined deadline.

Study time for this track is usually up to a month.

Where will the learning take place

In the holy study hall of our yeshiva or in your home by appointment.

Who will arrange for the learning?

A quorum of G-d fearing Torah scholars, students of the yeshiva.

What about refreshments?

We will take care of the refreshments and the saying of blessings for the ascension of the soul.

What is the significance of the ascension of the soul?

Based on what’s written in the holy books, the soul, once the person expires, ascends on high and there they judge and relate to everything that transpired in the person’s life while on this world.  During the first year of mourning the soul’s place is determined in the supernal worlds when the ultimate state of perfection is its stay in the Garden of Eden where the soul benefits from the radiance of the Divine Presence.  Our actions and good deeds in this world are merited by the soul, having a direct impact on the soul, thereby causing it to ascend to a better place.  One of the best causes is Torah study and the learning of Mishnayot.

Why is the soul unable to ascend on its own?

In the Babylonian Talmud, in the tractate of Sotah 5B, it says, “An incarcerated person cannot release himself from prison,” i.e., a person is unable to correct something after death, as it says in the Book of Psalms (chapter 86), “The dead are free…”, since once a person dies, the individual is free from mitzvot.  Specifically us who make up the next generation of the soul in this world, are able to correct and cause the soul to ascend to much better place.

Why do we learn the letters of the name of the deceased?

A person’s name form’s a part of his essential being.  Thusly it says in the holy books about the spirit of prophesy that rests on the parents of the baby when it’s born, to give it the right name, that comes from the soul’s source on High.  Therefore, when a person passes away, there’s importance to specifically learning the chapters of Mishnayot, each chapter beginning with a letter of the name of the deceased, thereby forming a direct bond to him and making the learning special for him.  If it’s not possible to learn the chapter of Mishnayot that are associated with the name, one can learn any Mishnah or any words of Torah on behalf of the soul.

Why are the books of the dead opened?
The Talmud in the tractate Rosh Hashanah page 32 relates that on every Rosh Hashanah the books of the living and of the dead are opened; that of the living is opened in order to judge them, but why does G-d also open the book of the dead? The answer is in order to see what the living did on behalf of the dead. As such, it would be proper to abundantly learn Torah in a general sense and to learn Mishnayot in a more specific sense in order to cause the souls of our relatives to ascend, who left this world for a better place.

What present can I bring to the departed one when visiting the gravesite?

In order to express your appreciation and love to your dear ones, many people bring different symbolic presents to the gravesite or to the mourning family.  The holy Zohar notes that also after the demise, the soul is to some extent still connected to the body.  It’d very important to remember Judaism attributes much importance to things that are done for the ascension of the soul, but these presents are of no avail.  It would better to give money to charity:  To give to a charity organization or to dedicate Torah study for the ascension of the soul of the deceased man or woman, as the verse says, “Charity saves sone from death”.

What else would be proper to do in memory of and for the ascension of the soul of the departed?

1. To light a yahrzeit lamp for the entire first year, a weekly yahrzeit lamp that can be purchased in a store.
2.  Likewise, the recital of Mishnayot is very effective for the ascension of the soul of your dear one.
3.  The recital of Psalms during the year.
Being called up to the Torah especially on the holy Shabbat is very helpful for the soul of the deceased.
4. The dedication of Torah study sessions in the synagogue or yeshiva for the soul of the departed one.  One should state out loud before the start of the session or hang up a sign with the name of the departed one and the names of both parents.  You can dedicate an entire day of Torah study and special prayer in our yeshiva.

Is there a connection between the soul of the departed and the family members?

Jewish tradition teaches us that after death, the soul ascends and there it’s judged for the deeds done during its lifetime.  When we say the kaddish prayer during the time of judgment, we are in actuality determining that the soul is good; it left behind its family with the same inspiration that teaches us of G-d’s greatness, the Creator and Leader of the universe, thereby giving the soul a present to be vindicated in judgment and to receive all of the spiritual abundance Above.  At the same time, the soul also prays for us to be granted all of our needs.
